Elden Ring: How to Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

Aug-22-2024

In Elden Ring, Mohg, Lord of Blood, is a formidable optional boss hidden in the secret depths of Mohgwyn Palace. While many players might miss him during their initial playthrough, the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC makes Mohg a mandatory challenge. To gain access to Miquella’s cocoon and advance to the Land of Shadow, you’ll need to face Mohg head-on. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for and defeat Mohg, including some essential items and a handy cheese strategy if you’re in a pinch.

Mohg

Mohg's Location

Mohg, Lord of Blood, resides in the Mohgwyn Palace, a secret subterranean area located within the Siofra River Well region, which also houses Nokron, Eternal City. Although connected to Siofra River Well, reaching Mohgwyn Palace requires a teleporter, typically accessed by progressing through Varré’s questline. Once you arrive at the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint site of grace, head up the lift and through the fog wall to confront Mohg.

How to Prepare for Mohg

Whether you prefer melee combat or ranged magic, two key items can make all the difference in this fight:

1. Mohg’s Shackle: This item temporarily stuns Mohg twice during the first phase of the fight, giving you a valuable opportunity to land some heavy blows. You can find Mohg’s Shackle in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds of Leyndell, Royal Capital, guarded by two giant crayfish.

2. Purifying Crystal Tear: This Crystal Tear mitigates the devastating effects of Mohg’s Bloodboon Ritual, a health-draining spell he casts at half health. The Purifying Crystal Tear is dropped by Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger, at the Second Church of Marika in Altus Plateau. It’s particularly effective when mixed in your Wondrous Physick with the Speckled Hardtear.

Additional Preparation Tips

The first tip is stocking up on healing and Blood Loss prevention. Mohg’s Nihil spell and bloodflame attacks can quickly drain your health. Equip Staunching Boluses or the Lord’s Aid incantation to counter blood loss and bring plenty of healing flasks.

Use Spirit Ashes is another important tip you need to bear in mind. The Mimic Tear, one of the best Spirit Ashes, is excellent for distracting Mohg, allowing you to attack him from behind. Alternatively, use your preferred Spirit Ash summon to divide his attention.

Mohg's Weaknesses

Mohg is highly resistant to fire, so consider inflicting frostbite or hemorrhage instead. The Lord of Blood’s Exultation talisman, which boosts your attack power by 20% when blood loss occurs nearby, is a great choice for this fight.

How to Beat Mohg

The battle with Mohg is a two-phase ordeal. In the first phase, he primarily deals physical and pierce damage with his trident and bloodflame attacks. Use Mohg’s Shackle to gain an early advantage and ensure you have armor and talismans that provide protection against physical, fire, and blood-based damage.

When Mohg reaches 50% health, he’ll initiate the second phase by casting Bloodboon Ritual. This move will heal him and inflict blood loss on you, making the Purifying Crystal Tear essential for survival. Stay mobile, avoid the bloodflame pools, and use a Spirit Ash summon like the Mimic Tear to keep him occupied.

If you’re still struggling, leveling up might help. Fortunately, one of the game's best elden ring runes farming spots is located nearby, so you can grind for runes before trying again.

Mohg Cheese Method

If all else fails, there’s a cheese method that still works as of mid-June 2024. Start the boss fight, save and reload your game, then return to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint site of grace. From there, take a specific route down the cliff until you find a gap in the floor. Drop down while riding Torrent and slash the air as you fall. After a few minutes, Mohg will die without you having to lift a finger.

While tricky to execute, this method can save time and frustration, allowing you to continue your journey in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC with minimal delay.
